An introduction to the art works inside the museum
Music playing throughout the building, nature unfolding outside the window, and a guest room enveloped in tranquility.
In harmony with those elements, it sometimes quietly captivates the heart, and at other times brings profound peace.
The artwork at Hotel Granbach Atami Crescendo aims to enrich your stay by evoking feelings and memories associated with natural elements such as mountains, the sea, wind, and water, and to become a lingering presence in your heart along with your travel memories.
Furthermore, as a hotel bearing the name of J.S. Bach, we also pay homage to the artist's vision and intentions that inspired his works.
A painting encountered during a stay quietly becomes linked to the artist's name, leaving a lasting impression.
That, too, is one of the unique experiences you can have at our hotel.
Mikiko Noji "Red and white plum"
I encountered the "Yaekabane" red plum blossom at Atami Plum Garden, which boasts vibrant yet soft colors.
Captivated by its beauty, this work beautifully depicts it together with the white plum blossoms in the background. While Atami is often associated with its ocean scenery, this piece focuses on the vitality of the plum blossom, a symbol of spring, and brings out its charm.
The artist's wish is for people to enjoy the beauty of Atami's plum blossoms throughout the year.
Yamamoto Moto "The Outline of Time"
This artwork is inspired by the "whirlpool," a symbol of rebirth in the East.
Inspired by Motoi Yamamoto's signature salt installations, the artwork is painted with acrylic paint mixed with glass fibers, and the canvas is composed of lines that mimic the texture of salt crystals.
For artist Motoi Yamamoto, the act of drawing lines is a journey through past memories, imbued with personal prayers and his own responses to questions about life and death.
The continuous spirals symbolize an endless chain of thoughts, quietly speaking of concepts such as resurrection, rebirth, and eternity.
Furthermore, the use of gold leaf in the artwork embodies the timeless brilliance inherent in gold, a material that has symbolized eternity throughout history and across cultures.
"Layering of Time"
In the "Layered Time" series, multiple lines are layered on top of a line that has already been drawn, as if tracing memories.
The repeatedly depicted swirling patterns represent the quiet but sure accumulation of time, and each line remains on the canvas as a trace of the artist's own experiences and thoughts.
The deepening density and fluctuations of lines, achieved through repeated layering, cast deep shadows, visualizing the passage of time, the complexity of memories, and the very process of regeneration.
Furthermore, the use of gold leaf creates a layer of time that embodies eternity, quietly radiating a radiant glow.
Kaoru Suga "Waterscape (confeito)"
Dusk and early morning are times of the day when you feel the passage of time most acutely, and the scenery changes moment by moment with the colors of the clouds and sky, creating a vibrant array of colors that makes you feel a pang of sadness at their passing.
This work was created with the image of Atami's waterscape in mind, and it evokes a timeless scene where stars shining in the sky, the sun, and the shimmering water coexist simultaneously.
The title "Waterscape (confeito)" was chosen to evoke the image of konpeito (a type of Japanese candy) that melts sweetly in your mouth.
"Waterscape (Odette)"
A work depicting a landscape of water sparkling in the light.
The light reflected on the water could be moonlight, sunlight, or perhaps the lights of the city.
The artist's desire to evoke the fundamental memory of water that lies at the root of humanity is embodied in this work.
This artwork expresses the elusive shimmer of waves by depicting them with natural minerals, and its appearance changes depending on the viewing angle.
The title "Waterscape (Odette)" was chosen to evoke images of constantly moving and dancing ripples and the nighttime atmosphere.
Kiminori Nakamura "Clover"
This artwork is based on photographs of flowers and plants found in everyday life, which are then deconstructed and reconstructed on a computer.
While subtly retaining the atmosphere of the original plant, I chose the clover plant as my motif, believing that it would give different impressions depending on the viewer's visual experience, memories, and even the place and timing of viewing.
This piece is inspired by the feeling of music expanding or the moment when the taste of food expands.
"Angelonia"
This artwork is based on photographs of flowers and plants found in everyday life, which are then deconstructed and reconstructed on a computer.
While subtly retaining the atmosphere of the original plant, I chose the plant "Angelonia" as my motif, believing that it would give different impressions depending on the viewer's visual experience, memories, and even the place and timing of viewing.
This artwork is inspired by the rhythm of conversations and the passage of time that occur during music and meals.
"Canna"
A series of three works inspired by the canna flower.
This artwork was created with the image of flying around in a waterside landscape.
Enjoy the dynamic atmosphere and the different impressions each artwork conveys, along with the view from the room.
"Iris"
This artwork is inspired by irises and depicts them floating and drifting in front of a space resembling a seascape.
"Geranium"
This piece is inspired by geraniums and aims to evoke a sense of wind and flow.
Aki Kurihara "Accordionist"
A person practicing the accordion in their room.
This artwork beautifully and gently depicts the time spent practicing the instrument that every musician possesses.
"A guitarist"
A woman playing the guitar
This artwork deliberately depicts people large on a small canvas to create a balance with the room and objects, resulting in a two-dimensional style.
This work was influenced by Matisse's studies.
"Cellist"
A person who plays the cello
This work centers around a person playing the cello, exploring the dynamic expression created by their physical movements.
"A room with the sound of a piano"
A room bathed in the yellow light of the setting sun, a time when the sound of the piano and the colors seem to blend together.
This artwork was created with a carefully considered composition to broaden the view, depicting the sound of a piano resonating in a large room.
The entire room is bathed in the glow of the setting sun, achieved by layering paint multiple times.
"Beach"
Everyone has memories of the sea in their heart: the sandy beach where you can feel the breeze and the leisurely pace of time.
This artwork depicts a scene of a sandy beach, while simultaneously conveying the presence of the invisible wind, by capturing the scene of many birds flying about.
The artist's belief is that when people immerse themselves in abundant nature, they too can become a part of it.
"Resonant moment"
A person relaxing to the sound of the violin, a moment of richness where life resonates with sound and light.
アンリ・マティス,Milton AveryA work that consciously incorporates the use of red and composition employed by [artist name].
The red table is placed in the center of the screen, a design choice intended to naturally draw the viewer's gaze to it.
"A moment of rest"
The lingering feeling of time that has passed and the anticipation of something yet to come, and the restful time in between.
This artwork expresses imperfection by deliberately depicting an unbalanced depth and perspective, even though it appears to be an indoor setting.
Furthermore, the yellow flowers, carpet, and walls are patterned to create a flat, two-dimensional effect.
"Ocean view"
A place where you can surrender yourself to the sea and the wind, a place with liberating views.
A work depicting a scene near the sea.
The painting evokes the feeling of the sea breeze, the scent of the ocean, and the presence of people relaxing amidst it.
Furthermore, careful consideration has been given to the colors to make the beautiful blue of the sea stand out.
"Twilight"
Twilight, a pleasant time before dinner, a time when the breeze feels nice.
This artwork depicts a quiet moment shared by people gathered around an outdoor dining table, bathed in the soft light of twilight.
The blurred colors and outlines create an atmosphere of acceptance and embrace, where everything seems to be accepted.
Raphael Barter "When you reach the coastline"
Rather than pointing to a fixed destination, this work encourages us to pause, observe, and question the fluid boundaries between humanity and nature, between existence and generation.
This reflects the artist's ongoing exploration of nature as both a physical landscape and a mirror of the inner world.
Light plays a central role, shaping the space while simultaneously evoking the fleeting and fragmentary nature of memory. The layered process of creating the painting emphasizes the artist's belief in the value of change.
Rather than depicting fixed scenes, this work captures the dynamic state of creation where beauty, uncertainty, and introspection coexist.
"Wandering Hills"
This work depicts not a geographical landscape, but a landscape of "existence."
It depicts a world where nature unfolds like a dream, changing shape according to emotions and the passage of time.
In a semi-abstract form, the painting depicts soft ochre-colored hills, winding streams, and distant peaks enveloped in pink and pale aqua, functioning as a space for introspection that reflects the artist's own inner landscape.
In the artwork, the hills don't simply "wander"; they drift like thoughts, maintaining a delicate balance between stillness and movement.
This artwork conveys how memories of nature remain in the body through the overlapping of colors and textures, and how they change through feelings of loneliness, longing, and introspection.
"Glimpse of a Lake Between Hills"
A work depicting fleeting impressions of nature as captured through memory and abstraction.
Layers of soft pink, earthy green, and ochre create a dreamy landscape where hills gently surround a pale lake.
The contrast in textures and the variations in paint shades create depth and rhythm, evoking the fleeting nature of passing landscapes.
The balance between intuitive composition and improvisational expression gives the works a sense of breath through the exposed canvas and overlapping colors, reflecting the emotional resonance of places, memories, and landscapes.
Rafael Barda "See Vastness Between Trees"
A work depicting a space where memory and nature are poetically intertwined.
The trees stand like pathways, and the space between them evokes not only a sense of physical expanse but also an emotional one.
The diffused light softens the outlines and blurs the boundary between reality and imagination, allowing inner sensations to overlap with the landscape.
Furthermore, themes such as impermanence, belonging, longing, transience, and the possibility of connection are woven into the work, and light is depicted as a force that connects nature and the inner self.
Through abstract forms and soft color tones, a sense of spatial and emotional expanse is felt simultaneously. The overlap between the landscape beyond the trees and the viewer's inner world demonstrates that "expansion" exists not only in the visible world but also within the heart.
"Blue Moon Between Clouds"
This work vividly combines abstract expressionism with natural symbolism, capturing not the literal form of the landscape, but its emotional essence.
Bold blue trees stand at the center of the canvas, while undulating hills and cloud-like shapes are depicted in textured pastels and earth tones.
Above it, a deep ultramarine crescent moon shines, floating in a soft lavender and cream-colored sky.
Avoiding a rigid structure, the images, unfolded through gesture-like brushstrokes and layered color planes, evoke not a specific geography, but rather a "memory of place."
The artist's travels and fleeting experiences are reflected in the visual expression, and the works convey the feeling that the landscapes are not merely geographical, but are shaped by inner reflection and time.
"A Pink Stream in the Undergrowth"
A work depicting a forest as a layered abstraction of colors and shapes.
Organic structures blend seamlessly with bold pinks, greens, and violets, creating a dreamlike landscape.
The central pink path, reminiscent of a stream or forest trail, meanders through mossy green, deep violet, and dark charcoal undergrowth, while vibrant mint, lilac, and crimson hues add movement and light, creating a contrast between flat surfaces and brushstrokes that intertwines control and spontaneity.
This work reflects the inner landscape shaped by emotions, inviting viewers into a strangely intimate yet unknown world.
"Ascent in the Morning Air"
This artwork depicts a mountainous landscape imbued with movement through the interplay of light and elevation.
Using soft pinks, ochre, and greens as the base colors, the artwork creates a scene where stillness and movement coexist simultaneously.
In this vertically elongated composition, pale green peaks rise through bands of ochre and terracotta, while a vibrant red streak crosses the upper sky, creating a sense of change and energy within the stillness, with the yellow and red textures generating subtle movement and rhythm.
This is a quiet yet powerful work that allows viewers to experience a place where air, light, and land delicately meet, creating a symbolic landscape.
"A Blue Stream Under the Sun"
A work that abstractly expresses the atmosphere of a place and the characteristics of its topography.
A blue stream meanders through deep green, ochre, and burgundy hills, blending into a warm pink background.
The vibrant orange at the top represents the low sun, conveying a sense of change in light and air.
While abstract, this work conveys the presence of a place not through sight, but through sensation, bringing together memories, topography, and feelings into a single image.
"Silent Path Into the Woods"
A work that expresses a quiet yet powerful forest scene through color and form.
The colors and shapes symbolize memories, emotions, and the tension of nature.
Dark green shapes approaching from the left and right are outlined in different colors, guiding the eye towards a soft mint and lavender glow, while reddish-orange and muted mauve dots evoke undergrowth and fallen leaves.
Neither entirely abstract nor entirely figurative, this work speaks through suggestion, conveying the feeling of walking through a forest rather than simply depicting it as a "picture."
“Where to Observe How Things Form”
A semi-abstract work that depicts observation itself as an act of generation.
The viewer is not simply invited to observe the form, but to engage with the process of its formation.
The layers of earthy red, muted purple, and pale ochre evoke the accumulation and erosion that occur over time. The soft outlines and ambiguous spaces reflect the coexistence of clarity and ambiguity, while the brushstrokes and textures convey the artist's introspective journey.
Based on a deep connection with nature, this work is quiet and meditative, with its forms, colors, and brushstrokes mimicking the fluid rhythms of nature.
