In celebration of J.S. Bach’s birthday on March 21, Hotel Grand Bach resonates with the philosophy of the international music movement “Bach in the Subways“. On Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22, 2026, we will offer public spaces within the hotel free of charge to musicians wishing to perform.
“Bach in the Subways” is a grassroots movement that began in 2010 when cellist Dale Henderson performed Bach’s Cello Suites in the New York City subway. Driven by the desire to “celebrate Bach’s birthday and connect classical music to the future,” he refused tips and instead distributed free postcards. This offering of a pure musical experience resonated with many, and has now expanded into a movement involving thousands of musicians across dozens of countries worldwide.

About “Bach in the Subways”
This is an international music movement started in 2010 by cellist Dale Henderson, who began performing Bach’s Cello Suites in the New York City subway.
With the vision of “celebrating Bach’s birthday and connecting classical music to the future,” he declined tips and distributed free postcards instead. This initiative to provide a pure musical experience gained widespread sympathy and has since grown into a global effort where musicians perform Bach for free in public spaces, sharing the allure of classical music with a wide audience.
