Richard Stoltzman, clarinet
Richard Stoltzman is a world-renowned clarinetist known as a highly accomplished soloist with numerous orchestras, a captivating recitalist, an innovative jazz performer and a prolific recording artist. His unique approach to the clarinet has not only earned him international acclaim, but has also expanded the possibilities of the instrument itself.
In 1986, he was the first wind player to receive the Avery Fisher Award, the most important award for an American instrumentalist. His achievements are evident as the first artist to give recitals at both the Hollywood Bowl (an open-air music venue in California, USA, opened in 1922) and Carnegie Hall (a concert hall in Manhattan, New York, USA, founded in 1891). He has also performed and recorded with such luminaries in the jazz and pop world as Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and Jeremy Wall, founder of Spyro Gyra. He is also actively challenging himself with new works, and has premiered excellent clarinet works by Steve Reich, Toru Takemitsu, Stephen Hartke, Einojuhani Rautavaara, and others, and his discography now consists of well over 60 pieces. He has won two Grammy Awards, for his recording of the Brahms Sonata with Richard Goode and for his recording of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms Trios with Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax.
In 2017, he released "Complete RCA Album Collection" (75 CD set) to commemorate his 40th birthday. Then, in June of this year, when he turned 80, he released "Last Solo Album -From My Life-" (Nippon Columbia). "This album certainly contains songs that have illuminated various turning points in my life, such as J.S. Bach, Brahms, and songs by composers Bill Douglas and Yehudi Weiner, whom he met at Yale University." (From an interview in Ongaku no Tomosha's "Ongaku no Tomo" magazine)
