A wellness hotel experience with ballet dancer Yukie Iwaki

Yukie Iwaki is a former principal dancer of The Tokyo Ballet. Currently, she leads the Iwaki Ballet Studio (founded in 2012), which pursues ballet at a global standard. In addition to serving as artistic director, Ms. Iwaki continues to be active as a dancer. We recently invited her to experience our Wellness Lunch Course featuring an “InBody” analysis and spoke with her about the experience.

Throughout the interview, Ms. Iwaki left a lasting impression with her constant smile and beautiful, upright posture. Well-versed in all areas of wellness and dedicated to practicing what she learns, she experienced Hotel GrandBach Tokyo Ginza’s wellness program, “Restoring the Autumn Body.” (Note: All photos, including the cuisine, were taken at the time of the interview.) This special plan allows guests to use the “InBody” body composition analyzer in their guest room to analyze their physical condition. Before enjoying a Wellness Cuisine meal—created by the hotel’s exclusive Wellness Food Concierge (Registered Dietitian) Ruriko Oshima and Executive Chef Sadaharu Kitajima to provide perfect nutritional balance—the Wellness Food Concierge provides a detailed explanation of the analysis results.

“For a dancer, one’s body is their greatest asset. Even at home, I step on a scale every day to manage my body fat and muscle mass. However, since those are for home use, I am delighted to have a menu where I can get accurate figures through InBody and then enjoy lunch. Being able to see my current physical condition quantified allows me to look at myself objectively,” says Ms. Iwaki. She mentioned that she had visited recently with fellow ballet dancers as well. “We had a wonderful time together,” she says with a bright smile.

“Weight and body fat percentage are important, but being able to check the quality and balance of your muscles is a huge advantage. The Wellness Lunch served after the InBody experience uses healthy, well-balanced ingredients, so you can enjoy a delicious meal without any guilt.”

Satisfying the Heart and Soul with Visually Stunning Seasonal Ingredients

“The colors and presentation are beautiful, and the balance is superb. I can feel the chef’s creativity and care in every dish. Often, ‘health food’ can feel restrictive and somewhat unsatisfying, but this course is highly satisfying. It features a balanced lineup from appetizers to fish and meat dishes that incorporate seasonal ingredients while keeping fats low, and it even includes dessert. I like it very much!” says Ms. Iwaki with great enthusiasm.

“Another attraction is that while the portions are substantial, the food is healthy and doesn’t feel heavy. Since a Wellness Food Concierge is present, I can hear detailed explanations about the menu, which is very helpful. I can gather all sorts of wellness information, so I’d like to experience this every month. It’s delicious and allows me to consume the seasonal ingredients of the time, so (to be honest) I’ve been recommending it to many people (laughs),” she continues warmly.

Ms. Iwaki has incorporated various health methods throughout her life, but one might wonder how she manages her daily meals and health.

“I have explored various methods to find what suits me, including macrobiotics (a dietary method based on brown rice, beans, vegetables, and seaweed, incorporating theories like ‘Shin-do-fuji’ and Yin-Yang), fasting, low-carb diets, and raw food (*a dietary style that primarily incorporates raw vegetables, fruits, and nuts). Currently, I prioritize seasonal and organic ingredients, with a ratio of about 80% home-cooked meals to 20% dining out. I feel that three meals a day is too much for me, so I eat twice a day. And when I eat, I chew thoroughly. I try to avoid things that are clearly not good for the body. I believe the most important thing is to listen to your body’s voice. I occasionally eat junk food, but I make sure to enjoy it deliciously without guilt. I also go to buffets. However, I adjust the next day to balance things out in my own way. My motto is to stay positive and enjoy delicious food without being too stoic,” says Ms. Iwaki.

Posture is the Foundation of Core Strength! Valuing One’s Own Sensibilities

In today’s world, where health and nutrition knowledge is constantly updated and information is overflowing, Ms. Iwaki remains flexible, listening to her body and maintaining a state of comfort. Her tireless energy seems to be the result of accumulated knowledge and practice.

“Yes, I don’t really feel ‘tired’ and am generally energetic (laughs). As for habits that have become natural to me, I try to maintain my posture even in daily life. I believe that maintaining core strength is a crucial point for health and maintaining one’s figure. Regarding body maintenance, rather than just maintaining a ‘best weight,’ I think it’s about looking in a full-length mirror and seeing if I look like myself. Being thin isn’t everything; it’s about being true to yourself! Furthermore, maintaining a physique that feels comfortable gives you confidence. Of course, it’s not that there is no decline at all. But there are things you can only notice as you age. I think that’s what makes it interesting. Ultimately, I believe that valuing your own senses, having fun, and being grateful are important for both wellness and ballet.”

Forty years of dancing. Ms. Iwaki’s style is to value the experiences and sensations she has cultivated and to always enjoy life with a positive outlook. Her words carry great depth and weight.
